Hello all, My name is Claine and I just moved to Idaho recently. I was looking on the web for hiking trails, came across the ICT and it interested me.  I am planning to hike the complete trail in 2016.  I wonder if anyone can help me with some information: Which direction is best, and when to set out; can food be cached, or does someone have to meet you at a trail access point; any special permits, or permissions needed.
I have looked through everything I could find on the web but these questions are still open. If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

I too am looking to hike the ICT next year. I would suggest reading Ken & Marcia trip report, http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=275627 they did it in 2009, she tried again in 2010 and got about half way. It would seem food cache's are frowned upon. My inclination would be to start at the Canadian border and head south. Two reasons I live in Pocatello and could drop off my resupplies on the way up, and second, from what I can tell the trails in the northern half are poorly maintained and marked and I want longer daylight to navigate them. Claine, When I head north to the trailhead I'll drop of my resupplies at outfitters going into the backcountry that I'll be hiking by or take them to business that will be willing to hold them in towns I'll be going through. My plan is to hike it in two months starting the first of July. What is your plans? Cary

I started at the south end for these reasons:
1) Cooler in the desert in June
2) You will get through the most flammable forests before fire season.
3) Northern streams are more likely than southern to have water in late summer.

I am making prelim plans to do a N section this Summer and then do a large portion 2016. I live in CDA so this makes sense for me. I would be very interested in sharing ideas, resources, etc with others who are planning. For those of you looking to do the N to S route Brian Frankle journal would be helpful, if you haven't read it

Thanks for the feedback, Mike... I'm not doing it in 2015, but I can only imagine how dry things might be this coming season. Yikes.

Bruce, I would be very interested in seeing some reports of your northern portion exploits. I will share my reports on any sections I do this summer as well.

I did read Brian's Journal from Summer 2008, but I'm going to treat his journal as potentially outdated since it is nearly seven years old. Only one way to find out!

I kept a journal of the 500 miles I hiked in 2013. I also have a couple of videos on youtube.

For the 90-mile Owyhee Desert section, my partner and I strongly recommend stashing water as we did, every 15-20 miles depending on how long you hike each day. All of those "creeks" on the map are only creeks during early spring runoff. Assuming you will have adequate water is dangerous.

Are you guys still planning on hiking in 2016? I thru-hiked this year and am happy to help answer any questions. Looks like 2016 may have quite a few hikers out there! I've spoken with at least 3 others that were thinking about it. One gal is going to attempt to run it with her partner!
